I first experienced acupuncture as a child. I’d had a challenging time growing up and was feeling angry and let down. I hadn’t much wanted to go but thanks to the treatment I received I began to find my voice and was eventually able to verbalise what I needed to the people around me.⁠

Those few sessions in a tiny little clinic with a kind, patient and experienced acupuncturist were transformational, beginning a life-long journey of reconnecting with myself and my family.⁠

Traditionally acupuncturists explain its effects in relation to the flow of qi in the body and the balancing of Yin and Yang – a framework of health which you might map to the Western concept of homeostasis. ⁠

The way that we ingest, store and transform qi and the balance and harmony of its flow within the human body is the basis on which acupuncturists practise Chinese medicine.⁠

If we decide to work together then the next step is to book an initial assessment and first treatment. Prior to that appointment, I’ll get you to complete a short health history form so I can get started on working out what’s going on for you.⁠
⁠
When we meet in person I will ask lots of questions to make a complete diagnosis of your main complaint and to get an overall picture of your health. We’ll also talk a little about emotional experiences that may have contributed to your physical symptoms.⁠
⁠
I am a ‘trauma-informed’ acupuncturist, which means that I understand that our emotions, traumas (big and little), past illnesses and current and past life experiences all contribute to our health.⁠
⁠
I will then look at your tongue and feel your pulses before starting your treatment.⁠
⁠
After we’ve done some acupuncture, I’ll go through which programme I think you need to be on and recommend lifestyle changes that you will need to make to ensure a quick and successful recovery.⁠

I weave the ideas of many different thinkers and philosophers through my work but there are a few people who have inspired me deeply.⁠
⁠
Pema Chödrön's emphasis on compassion and mindfulness has been particularly influential. Her teachings on developing greater self-awareness and cultivating a compassionate attitude towards oneself and others have inspired me to incorporate similar principles into my work. By recognising our shared humanity and practicing greater empathy and understanding, we can develop deeper connections with others and lead more fulfilling lives.⁠
⁠
Brene Brown's work on vulnerability and shame has influenced my approach to communicating with others. Her insights on the importance of embracing vulnerability and practicing courage in the face of uncertainty have encouraged me to be more authentic and transparent in my interactions. By being willing to show our vulnerability and share our struggles with others, we can build stronger relationships and deepen our connections.⁠
⁠
Lao Tzu's teachings have inspired me to strive for a more simple life; living in harmony with the natural world. By recognising our interconnectedness with the world around us, we can develop a greater sense of balance and harmony in our lives.⁠

Overall, these teachings have all contributed to my understanding of the importance of compassion, vulnerability, and mindfulness. By incorporating these principles into my work, I hope to help others cultivate greater resilience, empathy, and well-being.⁠
