A bumper supplement in the Guardian this week has inspired me to focus on anxiety this week. I treat LOTS of anxiety in clinic and acupuncture is a fantastic option if you are struggling with any form of anxiety.⁠

During the pandemic it was thought that 31% of us were suffering with some degree of generalised anxiety disorder (GAD) and it's taking many of us longer to recover than expected.⁠

I remember when the kids went back to school in March last year thinking 'right this is it, I'm going to feel totally normal now'. Yet 12 months later I was still feeling the effects of the lockdown. And I know that's the case for many of you as well.⁠

Anxiety is a normal response to danger and it's there to protect us. But it becomes problematic when it's there too much of the time and is too easily triggered. ⁠
⁠
You might be experiencing restlessness, nervousness, fatigue, poor concentration, insomnia, aches and pains, depression, palpitations, negative thoughts... but you don't have to go through it alone and with support you will move through it.⁠

I was asked yesterday what to look for when choosing an acupuncturist.

For me the first step is to check credentials.

Most acupuncturists in the UK are registered with the British Acupuncture Council. This is the lead regulatory body in the UK and they maintain the highest professional standards to protect the public. This register is approved by the Professional Standard Authority for Health and Social Care.

There are a few other smaller regulatory bodies so check what's in place so you know that your practitioner is working safely and is insured.

Boundaries are good for all of us but many struggle to set them.

It might feel scary to start with, but have a go at saying 'no' this week. 

The final part of my seven day challenge is to get my kids to make their own breakfast every day!
 
For you it might look like:

• Delegating a chore to someone else in the house
• Turning down an invite so that you can focus on self-care
• Asking yourself ‘do I want to’? instead of ‘is this feasible’?

The irony isn’t lost on me that I’m using social media to encourage you to turn your phone off.

This little basket is our phone basket where all phones SHOULD go overnight. 

Day 6 of the challenge is definitely about leaving my phone outside of my bedroom and switched off at night. I make the promise to myself time and again and then it creeps back in!
 
For you it might look like:

• Having a curfew so you switch your phone off at 8pm every evening
• Having some phone-free time each day to spend with your kids (uninterrupted)
• Limiting your TV time to an hour a day (and finding something else to do)

There is so much evidence that spending all these hours glued to our screen is bad for us. Even if you set yourself a goal that cuts it down by 1/2 an hour - that's 1/2 an hour of your life you've just got back. That's £182.5 hours a year! Imagine what you could do with that time...

I’m not sure if we have to be grateful for everything, but there is always something to be grateful for, even on the dark days. And focusing on those things sets a new way of thinking that can only be of benefit.

My challenge this week will be to do it every day. At dinner each evening we’ll sit around the table and each say something we’re grateful for that day. However small, it doesn't matter.

If you live alone, just say it out loud.

Or write it down. It's a lovely thing to do just before you go to sleep. It feels your mind with the good stuff before you drift off.

• move well • Exercise is essential for healt • move well •

Exercise is essential for health but how and what you do matters. Pounding it out at the gym 7 days a week weakens your constitution in the long run (and isn't sustainable for most of us). The Chinese prioritised regenerating exercises such as tai chi and qi gong and just like Hippocrates - walking!

For me, a healthy and sustainable approach looks like moving my body in some way every day. This week I will either go for a 30-minute walk (with the added bonus of fresh air and being in nature) or go to a yoga class, every day.
 
For you it might look like:

• Downloading either a 3, or 7 minutes a day HIIT app
• Measuring your daily steps and adding an extra 500 (the 10k per day steps is just a number remember, find out where you are currently and add a bit more – it doesn’t have to be 10k straight away)
• Following along with a Youtube yoga or Qi Gong class each day

Well, this is a big topic. So big in fact that I wrote THREE blogs about it - what, when and how to eat - which you can read via the link in my bio.

For me, eating well looks like eating three regular meals a day and keeping to a 12 hour eating window.
 
For you it might look like:

• Adding an extra portion of vegetables to your dinner plate
• Reducing your sugar in your tea from 1 to ½ a teaspoon
• Eating breakfast (even if it’s just a piece of fruit)

• drink • So, day 1 of our 7 habits in 7 days • drink •

So, day 1 of our 7 habits in 7 days is here and we're focusing on drinking water! My challenge is always that I don't remember to drink enough in the day (and then end up super thirsty in the evening). So this week I am going to put a jug of water in the fridge each evening, put it on my desk in the morning and make sure I have drunk it all by the end of the day.

For you it might look like:

• Swapping one of your cups of coffee or tea for a glass of water
• Starting each day with a hot water and lemon
• Setting an alarm to remind yourself to drink a glass of water three times a day

In Chinese medicine the advice is to do all things in moderation - eat when hungry and drink when thirsty. Also avoid drinking too much at mealtimes so you don't dilute your stomach acids as this weakens the digestion.

I like to apply these three principles to my acupuncture practise.

• simplicity • 

The best treatments are often the most simple. In Five Elements acupuncture we like to create the biggest change with the least intervention. I’ve seen beautiful transformations with just 2 needles.

The body knows how to heal. Give it time, space and the right support and it will do just that.

• forgiveness • I find this idea really usefu • forgiveness •

I find this idea really useful when finding forgiveness for things people have done to us. It’s incredibly freeing.

But it’s also a really important tool to apply when thinking about yourself. 

It’s easy to beat up on ourselves for the things we’ve done to ourselves. The mistakes we’ve made, the opportunities missed, the wrong decisions we’ve taken. 

But a little self-forgiveness goes a long way in the healing process.

I’ve especially noticed the regrets pour in when we start to heal.

“Now that I feel well I feel so bad that I didn’t make the changes sooner”

Remember, you were just doing the best you could at the time.
