Perimenopause and menopause can bring significant physical, emotional and psychological changes. For some women, symptoms are mild and manageable. For others, they can have a profound impact on daily life, relationships, work and overall wellbeing.
Acupuncture offers a holistic approach to supporting women through this transition. Whether you’re experiencing hot flushes, anxiety, disrupted sleep, mood changes, irregular periods or simply feeling unlike yourself, treatment is tailored to your individual symptoms and circumstances.
My approach recognises that every woman’s experience of menopause is unique. Rather than focusing solely on individual symptoms, acupuncture aims to support the whole person during this important stage of life.
Perimenopause is the transition leading up to menopause and can begin several years before periods stop completely.
During this time, hormone levels fluctuate and symptoms may appear long before menopause itself occurs. Many women notice changes in their forties, although some experience symptoms earlier.
Menopause is officially diagnosed when twelve consecutive months have passed without a menstrual period.
For many women, the symptoms associated with menopause actually begin during perimenopause.
Symptoms vary considerably from person to person and can change over time.
Common symptoms include:
Many women are surprised by how wide-ranging menopausal symptoms can be. Sometimes the emotional and cognitive symptoms can feel just as challenging as the physical changes.
Acupuncture takes a whole-person approach to health and wellbeing.
Rather than treating menopause as a condition that needs fixing, Traditional Chinese Medicine views it as a natural life transition that may be accompanied by temporary imbalances within the body.
Treatment is designed to support your body’s ability to adapt to changing hormone levels while addressing the symptoms that are most affecting your quality of life.
Patients often report that, alongside improvements in specific symptoms, they feel calmer, more balanced and better able to cope with the challenges of this stage of life.
Menopause affects far more than hormone levels.
Stress, sleep quality, nutrition, exercise, work pressures, caring responsibilities and emotional wellbeing can all influence how symptoms are experienced.
Acupuncture appointments provide an opportunity to look at the bigger picture. Treatment plans may include discussion around lifestyle factors, self-care strategies and practical ways to support your health during this transition.
This holistic perspective is one reason many women find acupuncture valuable alongside other forms of healthcare.
One of the most common questions I hear is whether acupuncture should be used instead of Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT).
The answer is that there is no one-size-fits-all approach.
Some women choose HRT and find it transformative. Others are unable to take HRT for medical reasons or prefer not to use it. Many combine acupuncture with HRT and find that the two approaches work well together.
My role is not to advise women for or against HRT. Instead, I support women in making informed decisions about their health and provide acupuncture as part of a personalised approach to menopause care.
Whatever choices you make, they should be based on your individual needs, preferences and medical circumstances.
Your first appointment includes a detailed discussion about your symptoms, medical history, sleep, digestion, stress levels and overall health.
From a Traditional Chinese Medicine perspective, women experiencing similar menopausal symptoms may have very different underlying patterns of imbalance. This is why treatment is tailored to the individual rather than following a standard protocol.
Acupuncture treatment itself involves the insertion of very fine sterile needles into carefully selected acupuncture points. Most people find treatment deeply relaxing and many even fall asleep during their session.
The number of treatments required varies depending on your symptoms and how long they have been present. Many women begin with weekly sessions before moving to less frequent maintenance appointments as symptoms improve.
Menopause is a gradual transition rather than a single event, and treatment plans are adjusted as your needs change over time.
Acupuncture is most effective when viewed as part of a wider approach to health and wellbeing.
Simple factors such as sleep, movement, stress management, nutrition and social support can all influence how you experience perimenopause and menopause.
This stage of life often invites women to reassess priorities, boundaries and self-care. Acupuncture can provide both symptom relief and a regular opportunity to pause, reflect and reconnect with your wellbeing.
If you’re experiencing symptoms of perimenopause or menopause and would like to explore whether acupuncture could help, I’d be happy to answer any questions you may have.
Together we can create a treatment plan that supports your health, wellbeing and quality of life during this important life transition.
