Acupuncture for menstrual health

Understanding your menstrual cycle

Many women grow up believing that painful periods, heavy bleeding, mood swings or overwhelming fatigue are simply part of being female. We hear phrases like “it’s just your hormones” or “periods are supposed to hurt” so often that we stop questioning them.

But while menstrual symptoms are common, they aren’t something you simply have to put up with.

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, the menstrual cycle is viewed as one of the clearest indicators of a woman’s overall health. Changes in your cycle can provide valuable clues about what’s happening within your body. Pain, changes in bleeding, mood fluctuations or irregular cycles aren’t seen as isolated symptoms, but as part of a bigger picture.

Acupuncture for menstrual health takes a whole-person approach. Rather than treating a diagnosis alone, treatment is tailored to your individual symptoms, health history and lifestyle. It helps to support your body’s natural ability to regulate and restore balance over time.

Whether your symptoms have been present since your teenage years or have developed more recently, acupuncture can support your menstrual and hormonal health.

What does a healthy cycle look like?

One of the things I love about Chinese medicine is that it encourages us to pay attention to our menstrual cycle. Whilst no two women are exactly the same, a healthy menstrual cycle is generally one that is regular, relatively comfortable and doesn’t interfere with your daily life.

Some signs of a healthy cycle include:

  • A cycle that is reasonably regular (typically between 21 and 35 days)
  • Bleeding that lasts around 3 to 7 days
  • Blood that is bright to dark red without excessive clotting
  • Mild discomfort rather than pain that stops you going about your day
  • Stable energy and mood throughout most of the month
  • Feeling able to continue with your normal activities during your period

Of course, there is a wide range of what is considered normal, and your cycle may naturally change during puberty, after pregnancy, whilst breastfeeding and during perimenopause.

However, if your periods are consistently painful, very heavy, highly irregular or accompanied by symptoms that affect your quality of life, it’s worth exploring further. These changes may simply reflect a temporary imbalance, but they can also be a sign of an underlying condition that deserves investigation.

Common menstrual health concerns

Every woman’s experience is different, but many women seek acupuncture for support with:

  • Painful periods
  • Heavy periods
  • Irregular menstrual cycles
  • Conditions such as PCOS, endometriosis and adenomyosis
  • PMS and PMDD
  • Hormonal headaches and migraines
  • Fatigue around the menstrual cycle
  • Hormonal acne

Below you’ll find more information about each of these concerns.

Painful Periods

Mild discomfort during menstruation can be normal, but significant pain that affects your ability to work, study or enjoy everyday life shouldn’t simply be accepted.

Period pain can range from dull aching cramps to severe pelvic pain, backache, nausea or pain that begins several days before bleeding starts.

Chinese medicine looks beyond the pain itself to understand why it is occurring. Acupuncture treatment aims to reduce pain, improve circulation and support a healthier menstrual cycle over time.

If your pain is severe, worsening or accompanied by very heavy bleeding, it’s important to seek medical advice as conditions such as endometriosis or adenomyosis may need investigating.

PMS and PMDD

Many women notice changes in mood, energy and physical symptoms during the days leading up to their period. Symptoms can include:

  • Irritability
  • Anxiety
  • Low mood
  • Tearfulness
  • Breast tenderness
  • Bloating
  • Food cravings
  • Poor sleep
  • Headaches

For some women these symptoms are mild, while for others they can have a significant impact on relationships, work and daily life.

Acupuncture aims to support both the physical and emotional aspects of the menstrual cycle, helping many women feel more balanced throughout the month.

Heavy periods

Heavy menstrual bleeding can leave you feeling exhausted and impact on your overall health.

If you’re regularly changing protection every hour, passing large clots or finding your periods are affecting your quality of life, then acupuncture can help support a healthier menstrual cycle and help to reduce some of the symptoms associated with heavy bleeding.

Irregular period

Menstrual cycles naturally vary from woman to woman, but significant changes in timing or frequency can sometimes indicate an underlying imbalance.

Irregular periods may occur during adolescence, after stopping hormonal contraception, during times of stress or as you approach perimenopause.

Chinese medicine considers the wider picture, including sleep, stress, digestion, energy levels and emotional wellbeing, when planning treatment.

Endometriosis

Endometriosis is a long-term condition where tissue similar to the lining of the womb grows elsewhere in the body, often causing significant pelvic pain, painful periods and, for some women, fertility difficulties.

Living with endometriosis can be physically exhausting and emotionally draining. Many women spend years seeking a diagnosis and are often told that severe period pain is simply something they must live with.

Acupuncture can help to manage symptoms such as pelvic pain, muscle tension, fatigue and the emotional impact of living with a chronic condition.

When I first started seeing Katy my cycle was on average 43 days long and I had been trying for a baby for around 9 months. A few months of weekly acupuncture treatments brought my cycle to a healthy 28 days & was helping to manage my endo pain so I was not needing to take as many pain killers.

Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS)

PCOS is a common hormonal condition that can affect menstrual cycles, ovulation, fertility, skin health, weight and energy levels. Symptoms vary considerably from one woman to another, which is why treatment needs to be individualised.

Acupuncture can help to regulate periods, and support hormonal symptoms or fertility as well as the wider health issues associated with PCOS.

It can be used alongside conventional medical treatment as part of a broader approach to managing PCOS and supporting hormonal health.

Hormonal headaches and migraines

Many women notice headaches or migraines at particular points in their menstrual cycle, often just before or during menstruation.

Acupuncture is commonly used to support people living with headaches and migraines and treatment may help reduce the frequency or severity of hormonally related symptoms.

Fatigue and your menstrual cycle

Feeling slightly more tired around your period can be normal.

But if you regularly feel completely drained, struggle to recover after your period or find that fatigue dominates your month, it’s worth exploring further.

Fatigue can have many causes, and acupuncture takes your overall health into account rather than viewing it as an isolated symptom.

Hormonal acne

Hormonal changes can affect the skin throughout adolescence and adulthood.

Rather than focusing solely on the skin itself, Chinese medicine considers the wider hormonal and constitutional picture, helping to support overall balance alongside any dermatological treatment you may already be receiving.

Supporting your menstrual health

One of the things I value most about Chinese medicine is that it encourages us to become curious about our bodies rather than seeing them as something that’s letting us down.

Your menstrual cycle isn’t just something to get through each month. It’s an important reflection of your overall health.

One of the questions I often ask women in clinic is, “Tell me about your menstrual cycle.” The answer often tells me far more than simply whether your periods are regular. It gives me valuable insight into your energy, pain, sleep, emotional wellbeing and overall health.

My aim is not simply to reduce individual symptoms, but to help you better understand your body, improve your quality of life and support your long-term wellbeing.

If you’re wondering whether acupuncture could help with your menstrual or hormonal health, I’d be happy to talk things through. I offer a free 15-minute telephone consultation where you can ask questions and decide whether treatment feels right for you.
